Boko Haram ambush on a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State has left seven soldiers dead and 13 others captured, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast.
The convoy was traveling from Maiduguri toward Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area, a hotspot for insurgent activity, when it was struck by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and heavy gunfire from suspected Boko Haram fighters.Several soldiers were injured, while others remain unaccounted for.
Eyewitnesses reported that the insurgents used the late commander’s phone to answer calls from his superiors, underlining the audacity and brutality of the attack.
This ambush is part of a long-running insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, led by Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Despite ongoing military campaigns like Operation Hadin Kai, the insurgents continue to target military and civilian convoys with deadly precision, particularly in remote road axes and contested territories.
Official statements condemned the attack and reaffirmed the resolve of Nigerian security forces to combat insurgency. The military has launched search and rescue operations to recover captured soldiers and neutralize insurgent fighters.
