Nearly 170 people were killed on Sunday in a deadly attack in the Ruweng Administrative Area of northern South Sudan, local officials said.
Armed assailants stormed several villages, killing scores of residents and injuring many others. Homes were burned, livestock stolen, and hundreds of civilians displaced as families fled to safer areas. Authorities condemned the violence and called for urgent intervention from the national government to restore calm and strengthen civilian protection. Security forces have since been deployed to the affected region, though tensions remain high.
South Sudan has faced recurring inter-communal violence despite a 2018 peace agreement aimed at ending years of civil war. Analysts say insecurity persists in several regions due to unresolved political and security reforms. Investigations into the attack are ongoing
