The tragic news from the El Wak Sports Stadium has left our nation in deep sorrow. Six young Ghanaians have lost their lives, with several others injured all in an effort to serve their country through the Ghana Armed Forces. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery. These were energetic, patriotic young men and women who only sought to serve Ghana. It is painful that such noble dreams ended in tragedy.
While efforts have been made to decentralize and digitize recruitment, the growing population in Accra and the desperation for jobs continue to cause overcrowding. We must not allow this tragedy to repeat itself.
I therefore make a humble plea to His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, to consider these compassionate steps:
*Allow each bereaved family to nominate one qualified relative for enlistment in honour of their lost loved one.*
*Ensure those injured but medically fit are absorbed in the next recruitment phase as an act of national solidarity.*
Moving forward, we must adopt modern, safe, and humane approaches to recruitment. These include:
1. Appointment-based attendance to prevent crowd surges.
2. Online pre-screening so only shortlisted candidates report physically.
3. Multiple regional venues instead of one large centre in Accra.
4. QR-code or biometric entry for verified applicants.
5. Emergency response teams from NADMO and health services at all venues.
These measures are simple, practical, and life-saving. The young men and women who died at El Wak did not perish out of recklessness, they died pursuing a dream to serve their country. Ghana must honour their memory by reforming our systems and protecting the living.
May the souls of the departed rest peacefully, and may their sacrifice remind us to build a nation that values every life.
