Breaking: FG Orders Free Electricity Meters for All Nigerians
The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a bold step to ensure every electricity consumer gets a meter installed at no cost, ending the controversy around estimated billing and unfair charges across the power sector.
The decision was announced after inspections of newly imported smart electricity meters in Lagos State, with the Nigerian National Grid confirming the directive. The government ordered that all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) must provide and install smart meters for customers completely free of charge with no fees, no deposits, no hidden costs.
Strict Warning: DisCos and meter installers are prohibited from charging consumers for supply or installation. The government has threatened prosecution and penalties for any official or company caught extorting customers or demanding payments.
This move aligns with earlier Federal Government efforts and regulatory policies to close Nigeria’s widespread metering gap, improve billing transparency, and boost consumer trust in the power sector.
Officials from civil society groups have also commended the policy, calling it a long-overdue step that protects ordinary Nigerians from exploitation and strengthens the rights of power consumers.
