May 12, 2025 is a day for the history books. Over 60 years of diplomatic relations between Kenya and Finland was beautifully expressed through the President of the Republic of Finland’s visit to the country. President Alexander Stubb and his spouse; Suzanne Innes-Stubb honoured an invitation from Kenya’s President William Ruto for an official visit, marking the first ever of its kind.
The welcoming ceremony for President Stubb was held at the State House in Nairobi, characterised by the playing of the national anthems of both nations and an honoural 21 gun salutes. Key topics that featured in the presidents’ bilateral talks were global challenges, educational reforms as well as conversations about regional conflicts and how to deal with them.
The state visit also included the convening of various Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs) in a roundtable discussion. Key issues included corruption, human rights, media freedom and political participation among young people; all these topics significantly shaping Kenya’s future. Representatives from organisations advocating good governance, gender equality, and youth empowerment emphasised the importance of cultivating an open civil society to strengthen democracy and address challenges like disinformation and violence against women.
In a one on one interview with Kenya’s NTV, President Stubb shared on the three things he believes contribute to the happiness of Finns. He highlighted the country’s abundant nature; about 75% forest, education and equality. “Happiness comes from personal meaning in life. Meaning comes from not acquiring stuff for yourself, but actually helping someone else and making a difference.” He added.
Again, President Stubb used the opportunity to visit Kenya’s national memorial park. During a solemn ceremony at the Uhuru Gardens National Monument, he laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, demonstrating his solidarity with the people of Kenya.
In a similar move, President Stubb, still accompanied by his spouse, paid an official visit to Tanzania from May 14th to 16th 2025. This was in celebration of six decades of diplomatic ties between the two nations, coinciding with Innovation Week Tanzania 2025.
The official reception held at the State House, hosted by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, included a Guard of Honour, national anthems, and bilateral discussions on geopolitical shifts, global challenges, and strengthened cooperation.
During a press conference, President Stubb emphasized the long-standing partnership between Finland and Tanzania, reaffirming his country’s commitment to equal collaboration in business, trade and global affairs. He also reflected on Tanzania’s special place in Finnish history, noting Former President Martti Ahtisaari’s tenure as Finland’s ambassador there in the 1970’s. The visit concluded with a state banquet hosted by President Hassan, underscoring the deep and enduring ties between these two countries.
It is clear that the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb has a commitment to the advancement of international relations, and is actively pursuing that course. His background in international relations and politics makes his visits more than a formality, but an intentional exercise meant to strengthen diplomatic ties as well as bilateral cooperation.
